Spanish retail giant El Corte Inglés has invested heavily in foodservice, having opened 40 restaurants in Spain and Portugal in the last two years with an investment of around EUR30 million. The company is looking to maintain this expansion and has set aside a further EUR15 million per year to drive this business segment.
According to Guillermo Arcenegui, Director of Hospitality at El Corte Inglés, the company is now looking at adding on-demand meal delivery to its foodservice operations. This is something that has been worked on for over a year and a test launch of the model is expected by year-end. Given its recent alliance with China’s Alibaba, already experienced in this field, it may be expected that shared learnings may help advance this project.
