Turkish customs will now apply an additional tax on any products originating from China, assuming they could be Alibaba deliveries, rather than personal items. This falls within regulations stipulating that “suspicious personal deliveries will be charged additional customs tax”.
Normally, products under EUR22 are exempt from the customs tax and now that seems to be a thing of the past. Last year, a reported 60 million parcels below the EUR22 limit arrived in Turkey, 26 million from China. Turkey’s Minister of Commerce recently declared that these “Chinese parcels” represented unfair competition.
The move is particularly interesting in light of Alibaba’s purchase last of year of Trendyol, one of the largest eCommerce platforms in the country.
